BCAAs and police took to Highway 97 on Lake Ellison on Friday morning to warn drivers to slow down and move when approaching stopped vehicles with flashing lights. “Every year, truck drivers across British Columbia put their lives on the line to help drivers when they are most in need, but many British Colombians are unaware of the laws regarding the safe approach of a truck with its headlights on.” , says a spokesman for BCAA. The event is an annual reminder and training tool. In British Columbia, motorists are required to slow down and move upwards for all vehicles that stop on the side of the road and have red, blue or yellow lights that flash. This includes maintenance workers, utility workers, police, fire brigade, ambulance, trailers, commercial vehicle security personnel, land inspectors, animal control workers, garbage collectors and other road workers. While many BC drivers are unaware of the law, drivers must slow down and change lanes for all vehicles that stop on the side of the road and have red, blue, or yellow lights that flash. The RCMP distributed warning letters alerting drivers to traffic rules and reminding them to drive safely. Failure to decelerate and move puts people on the side of the road and drivers themselves at risk. “So we’re here today to share it and we hope people start to slow down,” said BCAA spokesman Chris Dobson.
