Police closed the Quadra and View intersection, as well as the view between Vancouver and Quadra streets, after firefighters were called in to set fire to the View Towers before noon. Firefighters were seen rescuing a man from his balcony with a ladder truck. Rescuers rushed the man to hospital where he is said to be in critical condition, Victoria Fire later confirmed. Dense smoke seemed to come out of the apartment for a while before the crews destroyed the fire. Victoria police helped firefighters evacuate the building. Dan Atkinson, deputy chief of Victoria Fire, told CHEK News that the department was working to estimate how many people would be displaced by the fire. Tobias Jones, a resident of View Towers, said he was just returning home when a fire broke out on the 10th floor. “This fire was right next to my apartment,” he said. “If I lost my work in there, I lost my work of art. “I have collected many native works of art in recent years.” Another resident said they were sleeping in the 18th floor unit when the fire alarm went off. “It simply came to our notice then. “I started to smell smoke, I looked out my door, I could see some smoke in the hallway,” he said. “Right now there will be a lot of water damage and a lot of smoke damage.” The Victoria Fire Department confirmed around 12:45 that the fire was under control. This is a story that unfolds. More to follow… Fire in an apartment near my house in one of the tallest apartment buildings. The fire brigade was forced to rescue a man from a balcony, which was covered with soot and was put in an ambulance. # εεε pic.twitter.com/C4vstk7m3h – 🕸️Kate🕸️ (@SomethingDutch) April 29, 2022 See the Burning Towers.
