11-month-old Nafahat died of a breast infection after weeks of neglect by Fartun Jamal at her Kingfisher Way apartment in Brent Park, London. The Harrow Crown court heard that the 25-year-old knew that Nafahat was not well with “very high temperature” and poor appetite, but failed to take her to a doctor. Guests in the weeks before the baby’s death said her crib was broken and the apartment was full of packed lunch boxes, dirty dishes and diapers. The social services were visited on February 22 after being notified by a babysitter. They warned Jamal before their visit and when they arrived, the apartment was clean and the situation had improved. A second unannounced visit was scheduled for March 13 – the day Nafahat died. Jamal was charged with one count of causing Nafahat’s death by negligence, two counts of child cruelty with respect to Nafahat and a third count of child cruelty with respect to another child. Jamal, who was released on bail before sentencing, was sentenced to five years and six months in prison.
