The Chicago area could see heavy rain, gusty winds and hail on Saturday with the possibility of some tornadoes, said ABC7 meteorologist Greg Dutra. There is a 5% chance of a tornado within 25 miles of any given point in the Chicago area on Saturday, he said. ABC7 meteorologist Cheryl Scott on Friday. Several rounds of rain and thunderstorms are expected to develop on Saturday with the possibility of becoming severe. The threat of thunderstorms on Saturday afternoon and evening depends on the morning destabilization of the atmosphere, which the scattered thunderstorms on Saturday morning may inhibit. All storm threats are possible, but strong winds are more likely, Dutra said. Sporadic rains and thunderstorms are possible earlier on Saturday. The thunderstorms will not surprise, but the best chance for severe weather will be later in the afternoon and evening. The storms will start back near I-39 around 3:00 p.m. They will probably not arrive in the Chicago area until 5:00 p.m. It will then hit northwest Indiana at 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The system heading to the Chicago area has already hit Kansas on Friday and the images coming out of there are frightening. The video shows powerful swirls crossing the city of Andover, a suburb of Wichita. You can see the debris flying and the power lines sparking as the hopper tears everything in its path. Much of the city is now without electricity. No injuries have been reported so far.
