The CFD said it responded to the incident after receiving multiple calls for tobacco in the area from witnesses across the southeastern community and on streets in the area. Firefighters arrived to find personnel at the scene working to extinguish the fire. “A large bulldozer used by the landfill staff to extinguish the fire was mechanically damaged and then quickly overtaken by the fire. The pilot was able to get out of the machine safely and withdraw to safety,” the CFD said in a statement. “The fire quickly grew in size and volume and the fire brigade was forced to intervene with a remote water supply and pipes.” The crews worked all night with staff to reduce the fire to a pile of material believed to be construction waste and dry filling. It is not known how long the fire brigade will remain in the area, but officials advise the public to stay away for at least 24 hours. No injuries were reported. The recycling facility has experienced several fires in the past.
