KTM’s Miguel Oliveira was the surprise leader for much of the session on the road to fifth place, with Suzuki ‘s Joan Mir escaping a long braking moment before grabbing a third finish in front of rookie Marco Bezzecchi.

Hard front and middle rear tires are expected to be the preferred choice for the race and will be used properly by almost all riders in FP4. The only exceptions were rookie Bezzecchi, starting with a soft back, and – most importantly – Quartararo, who started the session on the hard back. However, having already set a strong pace in the used middle tire in FP3, the Frenchman could afford to try the hard ones just in case. However, Bezzecchi and Quartararo moved to the middle back for the second half of the session and both took a clear step in performance afterwards, each appearing in P1 at the end of the last 10 minutes. Alex Marquez, Darryn Binder and Fabio di Giannantonio went from the middle to the soft back for the end of the half hour. Marc Marquez, straight to Qualifying 2 after grabbing a trailer from Jack Miller this morning, was just 19th, but passed the session with old tires.

Qualifying 1, for those outside the top ten after the third free practice, including joint title leader Alex Rins, will begin now. Tech3 KTM’s Raul Fernandez, who was ruled out of last Sunday’s Portimao round with an injury to the right in the qualifiers, was also ruled out of Jerez. Factory test riders Stefan Bradl (Honda) and Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia) are making wild appearances this weekend ahead of Monday’s official test. After third place for Aleix Espargaro in Portimao, another podium finish for the RS-GP will mean that Aprilia will lose technical concessions. The Quartararo looked ready for a comfortable win at Jerez last season, only to break out of the lead with arm pump problems (for which he later underwent surgery) giving Ducati a couple with Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia . Franco Morbidelli finished third on the podium last year, taking what would be the final step for the Petronas Yamaha SRT.
