There was a time when Sam Howell was considered a candidate to be the first general in the 2022 draft, but his last season in North Carolina was not as impressive as one would expect and he finished sixth off the board. Howell went to the Commanders with the first choice of the fifth round and will start his professional career as a backup to Carson Wentz. It may not have been the way he originally planned things, but Howell said he feels he has finally landed in the right place. “It was a little stressful, but at the same time I trusted God,” Howell told ESPN.com’s John Keim. “I was waiting for a call and I’m so glad Washington called. This is a perfect place for me. “It’s a team I wanted to play in forever, that’s why I’m excited.” Howell said he is “excited to go to a place where I can sit down and learn from a man and see what it’s like to be a professional.” Wentz’s ability to change things after a steady decline of years will determine if Howell has a chance to climb the depth chart at any point in the near future.
