The outbreak of bird flu in BC. extends to West Kootenay

The virus has been discovered in a small herd

Poultry in a West Kootenay home have been found to have domestic bird flu, the latest case in BC. as the contagious virus continues to spread. The Canadian Food Inspection Service has quarantined the property, and producers within 12 kilometers have been notified of the test results, according to a statement Friday from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The ministry did not say where the residence was located, except that it is located within the Central Kootenay District. The suburbs include Nelson, Castlegar and Creston. The H5N1 strain had previously killed a bird in Vancouver in February and spread in April with reports of Delta, Vancouver, Bowen Island, Lac la Hache, Vanderhoof and Kelowna and North Okanagan. The virus can infect food-producing birds, such as chickens and turkeys, as well as wild birds and pets.
