According to the UN, more than 5,000,000 Ukrainians have fled their homeland to neighboring countries. Poland has received almost 3,000,000 Ukrainians, and there the locals are working to bring the necessary resources to the refugees and their pets. “I do not think that if you had told us six months ago that we would be sitting in Poland, we would have believed you. But the situation has become even worse, “said Liz Baker, CEO of Greater Good Charities. The Tucsonans, Baker and Noah Horton arrived in Poland this week, but a charity ground group has been working with refugees since March. Baker and Horton join the team to help draw up a long-term plan to help Ukrainians flee their war-torn country. The Greater Good Charities Horton COO said: “The plan is to continue to provide this level of support and that helps us do it more efficiently and effectively. “Being able to see the functions first hand and exactly how they happen allows us to distribute these resources in the most efficient way.” The team provides support to refugees and their pets through food donations, medical supplies, veterinary care and more. So far, the group has distributed 200 tonnes of pet food and more than 6,000,000 meals to refugees in Poland and other neighboring countries. “There is a resource issue here. There is a problem with resources getting things in. “Even at the food bank, we talked about how difficult it is to move things with the fridge right now and they just commented, you know these poor people have been eating the same canned food for weeks and weeks,” Baker said. The couple was only there for a few days, but they tell me that what they saw is incomprehensible. They are amazed at the strength of the Ukrainians as well as the kindness they have seen in neighboring countries. “The spirit of the Ukrainian people and the way their neighbors are stepping up to help is something that will definitely stick with me,” Horton said. They hope their Tucsonans compatriots back home will learn something from their mission. “Hopefully it will inspire people around the world to do something. “I’m not just talking about Ukraine, I’re talking about their daily lives.” During their tenure, Baker and Horton will travel to various cities in Poland and volunteer at food banks, animal shelters and centers for women and children before leaving on May 5.
